History and Activities
The Angelou Centre is a black-led women's centre based in Newcastle upon Tyne. The charity offers a range of holistic women-only services for Black and Ethnic Minority (BME) women across the North East. When the centre opened in 1993 its focus was on helping BME women into education, training and employment. The focus of the charity, however, has changed as demands for service users shifted. Being receptive to and addressing urgent community needs the Angelou Centre works towards ending violence against women and girls and supporting those affected by it. The Angelou Centre is unique for being the only BME-led women’s organisation in the North East.
A major initiative of the charity is the Angelou Haven which opened in April 2017. The Haven is a specialist refuge offering accommodation and holistic support for BME survivors of domestic and sexual violence. The Haven can support up to five families and five single women. The charity also offers a much larger outreach service which supported 234 black and minority women as well as 126 children across the North East in 2017. In total 5,112 hours of vital advocacy support were delivered.
The Angelou Centre also provides training and employability to increase access to work opportunities for BME women and girls. These include accredited courses in essential skills such as English, Maths and ICT but the centre can also support those in work to advance their careers. Arts programs and holistic activities provide a positive and supportive environment for women to socialise and network. Not only do these activities break cycles of isolation and broaden opportunities for vulnerable women, but they have also helped build an empowered women’s network which provides support and inspiration to younger generations. Fulfilling the Angelou Centre’s mission to empower BME women and girls, promote self-determination and transform lives.
The Angelou Centre is supported heavily by grants. The Big Lottery Fund has provided support in the form of grants which totalled £254,032 in 2017. Other large grants include those given by The Lloyds Bank Foundation (£18,000) and the Community Foundation for Tyne, Wear and Northumberland (£8,280). Other restricted grants were received from the Henry Smith Charity (£19,850) and the Heritage Lottery Fund (£32,907).
