History and activities
Butterwick Hospice Care provides specialist palliative care toward the end people’s lives. The John Butterwick Day Care Centre opened in 1984 and is located in Stockton. It was established by Mary Butterwick OBE (1924 – 2015) who sold her family home to finance it. In its 25 year existence, it has moved premises three times as a result of increasing demand for its services but has now settled into a purpose-built building next to the University Hospital of North Tees. Today it operates three hospices, two in Stockton, one of which is for young people and children, and one in Bishop Auckland.
Butterwick is a comprehensive end-of-life service provider whose mission is “to improve the quality of life for those who have a progressive life-limiting illness and those close to them and to offer positive support for every challenge they may encounter during their illness and to see death as part of life's journey. In 2016/17 it supported 2,000 people through a combination of in-hospice care, day centre provision and palliative treatment at home. The charity also provides bereavement counselling.
Donations and legacies form the largest individual part of the charity’s income, with 28% of total income coming from philanthropic sources. Its total income is nearly £5 million pounds. In addition to the recorded income, the charity benefited in 2016/17 from 157,487 voluntary hours work with an estimated value of £1,181,154.
