History and Activities
Following the success of the ‘Newcastle New Deal of Communities’ initiative, which was a 10 year £55 million regeneration programme, Centre West was established to continue the programmes core’s mission. That mission was to give residents of Newcastle’s West End a voice in how local government could develop job opportunities, improve healthcare, set ambitious goals for education, foster a safer community and enhance the local environment. Centre West continues to put the community at the heart of projects for change with the majority of its Trustees being local residents.
Core West’s broad remit is "to directly contribute to the closing of the gaps in quality of life between the people of the West End and the remainder of the City and enhance their life chances". The charity works exclusively with communities in Arthur’s Hill, Cruddas Park, Rye Hill and Elswick. These are areas which have not only the highest levels of deprivation in Newcastle but are some of the most deprived communities in England.
The charity holds a 57.6% share in the Beacon, on the site of the former West Road Fire Station. The £6.5 million development is managed in partnership with Groundwork South Tyneside and Newcastle and was opened by the Duke of Kent in 2012. The Beacon provides a space for business, conferences, events and community functions. Since opening The Beacon has provided a hub for start-ups in the West End but invites businesses from across Newcastle to take advantage of its facilities.
The charity also aims to deliver Community Development projects. One of these is the highly regarded Hat-trick project, which is a football in the community intervention for young people, was founded in 2005. Since then the project is estimated to have worked with over 10,000 children, helping children develop their confidence through sport.
Centre West also owns a number of properties which yields a rental income (2017 - £222,065).
