History and Activities
Gateway into the Community was established in 1998 and formally founded as a charity in 2002 to provide services for people with learning disabilities living in West Northumberland. The mission of the charity is to improve the quality of life of people living with learning disabilities by boosting confidence, raising self-esteem and encourage greater aspirations. The charity supports both independent living and individual goals. The organisation seeks to influence positive perceptions of people with learning disabilities in the local community and empower those with learning disabilities to think positively about their choices.
To do this, Gateway provides a range of social, educational and personal support services. Social activities provide an opportunity for people with learning disabilities and their families to share experiences and develop social skills in a safe environment. Educational services can include raising awareness of services, of best practice and sharing this with local communities and professionals. Gateway also facilitates amateur dramatic groups, sports groups, therapeutic art and activities for older adults.
Out of the Gateway into the Community’s total income of £230,806, £94,320 was received through grants and a further £18,777 was received through gifts and donations. Gateway relies on support from a huge range of philanthropic organisations who mostly provide small restricted grants. Between 2017-2018, Gateway won grants from fifteen different organisations with the single largest grants being £30,000 from the Garfield Weston Foundation and £20,204 from the Kellet Fund. The remaining 13 grants were on average £3,400 or less.
