History and Activities
Middlesbrough and Stockton Mind was established in 1995 by a group of local people who identified a need to establish services for people with mental health difficulties in their community. The charity is affiliated to, although not financially dependent on, the Mind network of charities, which is the UK’s largest mental health charity. Mind campaigns for local services on a national level with a mission to improve promote awareness of mental health issues and improve the quality of life for individuals and families experiencing mental health issues.
A team of 84 volunteers support 100 full and part-time staff members at Middlesbrough & Stockton Mind. Together, the team provides 16 different services and 7 courses. These range from peer support training, stress management courses, confidential therapy, mindfulness and ‘reablement’ for those experiencing long-term illnesses. With so much to offer, for every stage of life and for anyone living in the Tees-Valley area, the charity is both one of the largest and most personalised in the region focusing on mental health issues. Some mental health issues are life-long and will require on-going support but Mind allows individuals to make positive changes and live more independently. This increases the client’s quality of life but also can reduce the number of clinical interventions which can be both more intrusive and costly.
In 2017 Middlesbrough & Stockton Mind worked with 6,700 people to achieve this objective, at a cost of £3,417,679. Around two-thirds of its £3,760,999 income was derived from delivering community-based contracts on behalf of local authorities and the National Health Service. The remainder of the income is made up from grants, which in both 2016 and 2017, predominantly came from the Big Lottery Fund. The largest of these was a grant of £1,078,839 to support the Ageing Better project. This project, which has a national budget of £78 million, is aimed at tackling social isolation amongst the UK's ageing population by empowering local older people to request or establish groups and activities.
