History and Activities

Established in 1988, NIWE supports people with eating distress/disorders in the North East. The region has a rising epidemic of eating distress. Each year there are around 112 new cases of anorexia nervosa being diagnosed, particularly amongst young women, but also increasingly, amongst men (nationally there was a 27% increase in men being treated for eating disorders last year). To combat the increasing threats to community health, the NIWE charity offers group support, group therapy, individual counselling and information and training. They also work with secondary schools to promote issues surrounding eating disorders and awareness of eating distress.

In 2017, NIWE delivered 754 hours of counselling and provided 29 awareness sessions to 1,252 people. It offers monthly recovery group sessions and as well as a designated women-only group, reflecting that it is primarily, but not exclusively, a problem which affects women.

In recent years NIWE’s main benefactor has been the Big Lottery Fund which provided £114,861 in 2017 through its ‘Reaching Communities Programme’. NIWE’s total income in 2017 was £154,211 and while Big Lottery provided the majority of this funding other sponsors included the Greggs Foundation (£9,929) of which Ian Gregg is also a patron of the charity and several Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs). Past sponsors have also included the Northern Rock Foundation and the Lloyds Bank Foundation.
