History and Activities
Northumberland Domestic Abuse Services (NDAS) is a charity that provides practical and emotional support to anyone affected by domestic abuse in Northumberland. Domestic abuse is on the rise; an estimated 7.5% of women (1.2 million) and 4.3% of men (713,000) experienced domestic abuse in the twelve months prior to March 2017. Statistics indicate a 6% rise in reported figures over a twelve-month period.
Recognising that domestic abuse can affect anyone, regardless of socio-economic background, gender, class or sexuality, NDAS offer services to anyone affected by abuse. The organisation focuses its efforts on forming strategic relationships with relevant agencies and professionals to provide a holistic service across Northumberland. Over the last year, the charity directly supported over 400 people experiencing domestic abuse and has worked with hundreds of other children and adults in the county through awareness-raising activities, training sessions and prevention workshops in schools. NDAS deliver group programmes to children and young people in schools and community settings to engage young people in understanding and recognising unhealthy and abusive behaviours.
The charity is supported through private and large donor funding sources. The largest funder was the Big Lottery who provided £164,063 of their £429,506 total income until 2018. The charity also receives funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner for specific projects. The charity launched a Save Our Service campaign in autumn 2018 and are appealing to local services, MPs and referral partners to speak out in support of the organisation and the specialist support that it offers the county.
