History and Activities

Northumberland Wildlife Trust is a charity dedicated to saving wildlife and wild places and helping people get closer to nature. It works to make life better – for wildlife, for people and for future generations.  It believes the North East should be rich in wildlife for the benefit of everyone. Nature is central to our own health, happiness and economic prosperity and therefore is at the core of everything it does.

The Trust is one of 46 Wildlife Trusts in the UK. Today, it manages over 60 nature reserves in Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland; places where wildlife can survive and thrive. It also advises other landowners and organisations, runs projects to help endangered animals and plants and campaigns against development on green spaces. In addition, it provides a range of educational events, activities and information for adults, families and schools at its visitor centres, which are Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre, located at the northern end of Druridge Bay and Northumberlandia, near Cramlington. The core message is that people should more greatly value the natural world and stand up for wildlife.

The Trust has an impressive number of volunteers; numbering over 600 in 2018. Their roles are wide-ranging, supporting anything from tree planting to conducting surveys, planning fundraising activities and assisting with events and education sessions.

Like its counterparts across the UK, Northumberland Wildlife Trust is dependent on income from a variety of sources. Philanthropic giving in the form of grants from charitable trusts and foundations, membership fees, donations and legacies constituted about 60% of the total income of £2.5 million in 2017/18.
