History and Activities
Northumbria Coalition Against Crime follows a long tradition of communities and businesses working together to reduce crime and criminal behaviour. The Northumbria Coalition is one of the oldest such groups in the North East with 28 years of experience. It is also one of the biggest groups and works in partnership with Northumbria, Durham, Cleveland and North Yorkshire Police. It’s one of the most successful organisations because it doesn’t just seek to help find and punish offenders. The Coalition Against Crime recognises that long-term crime reduction means helping to create more cohesive communities. Services range from crime prevention advice for businesses to enriching activities for young people to stop young offenders.
The charity operates two core groups around which its activities are centred. The first is the Business Crime Reduction Department which works with businesses and agencies to identify threats to safety and reduce financial losses by deterring and detecting crime. The main project of the department is the North East Retail Crime Partnership which has been in operation since 1998. The partnership provides an information sharing and support network for retail businesses in the region. For example, the partnership circulates images of known individuals wanted in connection with crimes amongst its members. The second department is the Youth and Community Programme which operates a mentoring project for young offenders. The programme has been a huge success. 70% of the young people who the charity helped did not re-offend and 82% engaged in or maintained educational training or employment.
A large proportion of the coalition’s income is derived from Big Lottery Funding. Income from the Lottery’s Reaching Communities programme amounted to £78,552 in 2017. This represents almost a fifth of the organisation's total income. Like many charities, they rely heavily on volunteers. All of the youth programme mentors are volunteers. The Odysseus Mentoring Project along trained 25 volunteers 2016-2017.
