History and Activities

The Percy Hedley Foundation was established in 1953, a little over 10 years after Percy Hedley died. Percy, who had no heirs, stated in his will that his entire estate was to be distributed at the discretion of trustees to charitable causes in the North East. One-third of the estate, it was decided, should be used to endow a foundation to support and educate children with cerebral palsy. The £6,000 bequeathed for this purpose was used to buy Hampeth Lodge where the Percy Hedley School is still based. It was opened a year later by the Duchess of Kent, with 32 children enrolled. A grant from SCOPE (formerly the Spastics Society) in 1960 allowed the Foundation to purchase Chipchase House where an adult day workshop and a residential home were established. The Sir James Knott Trust next provided funding in 1968 to construct a senior school, and in 1974 Sir James Steel provided the funding needed to fully renovate Chipchase House.

The Percy Hedley Foundation has continued to grow with help from donations and grants from philanthropic trusts and foundations, progressively expanding its repertoire of services for children and adults with complex learning needs, communication impairments and therapeutic needs, as well as continuing to support people with cerebral palsy. The Foundation operates three schools, provides adult residential care, and community outreach services to support independent living. Speech and language therapy, as well as physiotherapy, take advantage of the most recent research to improve the well-being of individuals. A recent development is the provision of sporting opportunities. Powerchair football, wheelchair basketball and boccia allow athletes of all abilities to participate, bringing both health and social benefits. The Percy Hedley Foundation is supporting the growth of sports throughout the North East, allowing teams to compete regionally and nationally.

In the financial year 2016/17, the charity educated and cared for 641 children and adults, 96 on a residential basis and 545 through the provision of day care services.
