History and Activities

Tyneside Women’s Health (TWH) formally registered as a charity in 1987 but can trace its roots to a community group established in the early 1980s to provide mental health support to women in Gateshead. The services and area covered have expanded over the years and the charity now serves all of Tyneside, with a headquarters in Gateshead and a satellite centre based in Byker, Newcastle. As a women-only organisation, TWH has provided a safe space for women to access support for mental health issues for the past 33 years.

The charity provides counselling, support groups, drop-in sessions, therapeutic sessions, and runs social activities which range from belly dancing to crafts. TWH also hosts a strong educational programme which ranges from sessions raising awareness of mental health issues in the community to powerful workshops for individuals seeking to manage anxiety, cope with depression or to take positive steps towards raising self-esteem and confidence. TWH also works with survivors of domestic or sexual abuse and offers both short and long term support for women and girls.

As part of a network in Tyneside of support for mental health, and for women, TWH works in partnership with a number of organisations including Changing Lives, Wise Steps and the Worker’s Education Association. Between 2017-2018 TWH reported helped 650 women to improve their mental health, provided support groups for special groups such as women over 55, survivors of domestic abuse and people with long term mental health issues. TWH also organised workshops focusing exclusively on enabling women to set future goals to support recovery.
