Corporate Philanthropy is often seen as strategic and reputation building. This workshop will explore the less often noted impact of employee involvement in philanthropic work. It will introduce a variety of projects undertaken by employees in John Lewis branches in Newcastle and Edinburgh, discuss their involvement in the nomination and selection of philanthropic projects and use Dr Nicholson’s research with partner focus groups to demonstrate the benefits of this work for the community, the business and employees themselves. Dr Nicholson’s research demonstrates that the joy of giving is manifest through the persistence of employees’ philanthropic work, their commitment to the organization and their sense of ownership over philanthropic projects.

Following this introduction, participants will be encouraged to share their own experiences of employee engagement in philanthropy and to consider the barriers and opportunities available to employers by involving employees at all stages of corporate philanthropy.
