History and Activities

Martin Ballinger (1943-2007) founded the Go-Ahead Group in 1987 following the privatisation of the National Bus Company. Ballinger engineered a management takeover of the bus company’s northern division based in Gateshead, and early expansion saw a series of takeovers of smaller regional competitors. The Go-Ahead group has since expanded across the country and is today one of the largest transport businesses in the UK. Ballinger’s wealth from the Go-Ahead group enabled the family to found the Ballinger Charitable Trust, a grant-making organisation that principally funds North East charities. Martin sadly passed away in 2007, and the trust is now headed by his wife, Dianne, and son, Andrew.

The trust favours charities that support the health, development and well-being of young people, promote cultural or art projects, or help the elderly those suffering from degenerative conditions like dementia. In 2016, the trust made grants totalling £2,287,376. The largest grants were made to Age UK’s North East branches (£327,618), the Alzheimer’s Society (£140,630), Dementia Care (£132,635), North East and Cumbria Dementia Fund (122,990) and Save the Children Wallsend (£83,333). Charities serving young people, dementia sufferers, elderly people, women, families and the homeless predominate in the list of grants awarded. The trust has made grants in excess of £18 million since its establishment in 1994. It is open to a range of collaborations with charities and welcomes fresh ideas and charitable initiatives.
