The trust was established in 1979 by Hugh Percy (1914 -1988), the 10th Duke of Northumberland. The 10th Duke was a keen agriculturalist, endowing the Duke of Northumberland Chair in Rural Economy at Newcastle University, then establishing the trust to assist charitable organizations in local communities. The current trustees are the 12th Duke, Ralph Percy (b. 1956), and his younger brother, Lord James Percy (b. 1965).
The trust predominantly makes small grants of under £5,000 to environmental, educational, arts and heritage organizations, and a limited number of larger awards. It awarded £115,630 in grants in the financial year 2016/17, including £37,000 to Northumberland Church of England Academy, of which the present Duke is a sponsor, and £30,000 to the Alnwick Playhouse.
