History and Activities
The Joicey Trust was created in 1965 by Hugh Edward Joicey (1881 – 1966), 3rd Baron Joicey, who led the family’s County Durham coal business following the death of his father, James Joicey (1846-1936), the 1st Baron. James, nicknamed ‘old king coal’, was one of the leading figures in the UK coal industry prior to nationalization in 1947. His firm, the Lambton, Hetton and Joicey Colliery Co. employed 20,000 workers and produced 5 million tons of coal annually in the 1920s.
The Joicey Trust is a grant-making organisation that funds smaller charities and community groups. In 2016/17, £231,700 was paid out in grants to 121 groups and charities, the average sum awarded being £1,915. Beneficiaries included scout troops, music societies, churches, food banks, sports clubs, community associations, village halls, youth clubs, agricultural societies, refugee groups and a theatre. Relatively small sums of money awarded by grantmakers like Joicey do a disproportionately amount of good in supporting volunteer-led grass-roots charities whose existence improves the lives of millions of people across the UK on a daily basis.
