History and Activities
Gateshead is one of the leading centres of orthodox Jewry in Britain. Gateshead is home to a population of 8,000 Jews and lays claim to be the UK’s fastest growing Jewish community. The town is home to internationally important educational institutions. Gateshead Talmudical College, popularly known as the Gateshead Yeshiva, was established in 1929 and is the largest Yeshiva in Europe and one of the most prestigious in the Orthodox world. The Yeshiva has a student population of about 300, typically young men aged between 15 and 23, who study traditional religious texts. The Gateshead Jewish Academy, a two-year post-secondary college, was opened in 1998 to educate 200 young women aged 16 to 21 in the Orthodox Jewish faith.
Philanthropy is deeply ingrained in the Jewish community, both in the more liberal strains of Judaism and in the Orthodox tradition. The doctrine of self-help has given rise to a myriad of charities to support all aspects of Jewish community life in Britain and Israel. Latate Limited is a Gateshead based example of a philanthropic grant-making charity that supports education in the doctrines and principles of Orthodox Judaism in Gateshead and in Israel. It is a private foundation that does not solicit applications but rather selects the charities to which it makes donations. The greater part of its income (86.1% in 2016/17) comes from investment properties, which is then distributed to support its charitable purpose. In 2016/17, grants totalling £983,786 were made, the majority (£941,300) awarded in large grants to just 14 charities, averaging £67,236.
