History and Activities

The Millfield House Foundation was established in 1976 by the businessman-academic, Grigor McClelland, endowed with shares in the family firm, Laws Stores, to “promote policy change by funding projects that inform discussion and influence public policy.” The Foundation, which made grants worth £386,455 in the financial year 2015/16, is unusual in the North East in seeking to achieve its ultimate goals of empowering communities and reducing social deprivation indirectly through public policy rather than directly through charitable giving. It is a bold stance, reflective of its founder’s belief in the power of argument and evidence ultimately to triumph over the injustices rife in contemporary society.

Millfield House is a committed grant maker unafraid to make the large grants needed to conduct good policy research and make an impact on policy through the publication of influential reports. Thus, in 2015/16, it awarded the Institute of Public Policy North £134,742 for a fellowship and a contribution to core costs, £120,000 to the regional refugee forum for research and campaigning, £72,400 to the North East Child Poverty Commission to help fund its project Addressing Child Poverty, and £60,000 to the Newcastle Citizens Advice Bureau for social policy research.
