History and Activities

The Tees Valley Community Foundation (TVCF) is one of three community foundations covering North East of England, together with the County Durham Community Foundation and the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland. It was established in 1988 by Squadron Leader Kenneth Kime (1944-2018). Originally known as the Cleveland Community Foundation, it was renamed and rebranded in 2005.

TVCF is predominantly a small grant maker, its business model differing significantly from the community foundation norm. Rather than establishing large numbers of donor-advised funds with restrictions on how the money may be spent, donations are made to a small number of funds from which grants are made. There are eight of these: the Teesside emergency relief fund offering grants of £250 to individuals in need; the Tees Valley small grant fund offering grants of up to £1,000 to community groups; the Teesside offshore community benefit fund offering grants of up to £1,000 to community groups in coastal locations; the Northumbrian Water fund offering grants of up to £1,000 for community or environmental projects; the Goshen fund offers grants of up to £5,00 to community groups addressing problems of social exclusion; the Stockton Borough community fund offering grants of up to £1,000 specifically to community groups in Stockton; the pursuit of excellence sport fund offering grants of up to £1,00 to young people aged 12-24 who need financial assistance to achieve their sporting goals; and, the John Bloom law bursary offering a grant of up to £6,000 payable over three years to an outstanding undergraduate law student. TVCF made 459 grant payments in 2016/17 with an average value of £1,216.
