Hillery, Mark

Mark Hillery is a hedge fund manager. Hillery attended Harrogate Grammar School and then Durham University. He was a director at Brevan Howard Asset Management, Europe’s largest hedge fund provider, before stepping down in 2015. Over a 30-year career, he has enjoyed remarkable success in the City of London working for various financial institutions, including Tudor and Credit Suisse. His success in making money for others has earned a large fortune for himself.

Mark has retained a strong affection for the North East, Durham University and Collingwood College, one of its constituent colleges. He lives in London and New York. In 2016, he gave £5.6m to Collingwood College to establish a new 200-seater arts centre, a gym extension, a yoga/pilates studio, an enlarged junior common room, and a bar conservatory. This gift alone ranked him in the top 40 philanthropists nationally in 2016. This followed an earlier gift in 2010 to establish the Mark Hillery gym, credited in part with the many outstanding sports successes Collingwood College.

Mr Hillery is said of his gifts to Durham University:

“After you leave this place [Collingwood College] never forget the favour it has bestowed upon you. A favour in life should always be reciprocated. By donating some of your future success back to this College you will help perpetuate and accelerate the same attitude in future generations of Collingwood students.”

For similar reasons, Mark donated £100,000 to Almscliffe Tennis and Bowling Club in Huby, North Yorkshire, where he was born and raised, and where his parents lived for 45 years.
